Childproofing and Preventing Accidents for your Children

Whether it’s your home, the grocery store, or the playground, kids love to explore. Whatever environment they are in, they are very curious and want to get into everything. You may not have much control in places such as the mall or restaurant, but you can definitely check for hazardous items in and around your home.

Unintentional injury is one of the top killers of children, and can luckily be prevented by using child safety devices. Here is a checklist of things to make sure is complete for best prevention

  1. Safety Latches

Install these in bathrooms, kitchens, anywhere with a cabinet or drawer that can contain substances that are poisonous or harmful.

  1. Safety Gates

Install these at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent injury. Saftey gates can also be installed in doorways of rooms that contain harmful items, such as the garage or the laundry room.

  1. Doorknob Covers

These help children from entering rooms where there may be possible dangers and harmful items and poisons, such as the bathroom with makeup and items like a Candylipz volumizer, which can be a choking hazard.

  1. Corner and Edge Protectors

Use these on pieces of furniture with sharp corners or edges to prevent injury.

  1. Toilet Locks

Children like to get into things they shouldn’t, and they can easily fall into the toilet head first and possibly drown, since their heads are heavy when they are young.

  1. Electric Outlet Plugs

With such tiny little fingers, kids are tempted to stick them into the outlet holes, and possibly get electrocuted.

  1. Replace Blinds and Drapes

If your blinds are purchased before 2001 and have looped cords, they need to be replaced to meet safety standards. You can also purchase hooks to wrap the cords around, and install them up high, where children won’t be able to reach them.

  1. Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Make sure your fire alarms have good batteries and are updated to the current standards.

  1. Anchors

For furniture like bookcases and televisions, children can climb on them and get crushed. To avoid this, anchor items like shelves and dressers to the ground or to the wall.

  1. Unplug electric items when not in use

Devices like hair dryers can cause electrocution when it comes into contact with water. When possible, plug electronic devices away from sources of water, or unplug them immediately after you are finished using them.

Hopefully this list gives you some ideas as to how to prevent your children from injuring themselves. As always, safety is the #1 priority when it comes to our kids, and prevention is very important!…

How Canadian Mums Can Stay Slim During Winter

How Canadian Mums Can Stay Slim During Winter

Winter brings with it the holiday season, and mouth-watering roast turkey that everyone cannot wait to put into their mouths. The November to February months are even tougher for new, Canadian mothers. The country has a cold climate, which makes hot, delectable dishes attractive. To add, post-pregnancy contributes to weight gain.

If you are a busy Canadian mum, you may need support to bring down the excess weight that builds during this time. You could use weight loss methods to rein in winter weight, or turn to natural, weight loss herbs. Alternative therapies, available in Canada, may benefit you as well.

Weight loss methods to curb winter weight gain

There are many diet pills and supplements that busy mothers may turn to as quick-fix, weight loss solutions. Effective as they are, they may have undesirable side effects.

For busy mothers whose weight issues are not severe, losing weight merely requires simple methods that take some fortitude and discipline. Here are some suggestions they can use to lose winter weight.

  1. Maintain your weight.

Studies highlight that a person only packs on one to two pounds during the holidays. While this seems minimal, nutritionists like Milton Stokes, who owns One Source Nutrition, caution that those with a tendency for obesity may gain a little more weight during festive, winter seasons. Weight tends to stay with them once they put it on.

Stokes suggests that weight maintenance is as important as weight loss. He proposes creating eating plans that busy mothers can stick to during winter months. Delightful food and social obligations may mean that weight loss is a less reachable goal. Besides, watching one’s weight and food intake prevents the “yo-yo”, rise-and-fall effect that is difficult to control.

  1. Do not gorge yourself.

That stuffed turkey that took six hours to roast in the oven is tempting, and those delicious mince pies may draw you to stuff yourself as if it was your last meal. Gorging on holiday food often leads to weight increase that is difficult to bring down. Staying aware of your weight loss goals and what you eat at holiday dinners helps to fend the pounds off.

Children may heap their plates with food, leaving their moms to eat what they cannot finish. Try not to eat what your children cannot, and control the amount of food on their plates instead.

  1. Plan ahead

The holiday seasons does not have to daunt your weight loss goals, if you plan your meals and exercise routines daily. You will have to moderate the amount of food you prepare so that you are not compelled to finish leftovers. It is perfectly fine to reject food or drinks that are not part of your meal plan. It is difficult to turn away food that people push on you, but stay vigilant and persist with keeping to your weight loss plans.

  1. Prepare yourself

To add, if you do not plan your meals ahead and prepare a few healthy contingency snacks, you may find yourself reaching for unhealthy bags of chips while you are out shopping for your children’s presents. Have a healthy bento box or carrot sticks in a mini cool bag. Plain nuts, instead of pretzels, are a healthier snack alternative than sundaes.

  1. Avoid alcohol

It is also important to avoid alcohol. Research shows that alcohol has empty calories and lowers your inhibition, prompting you to eat fried, fatty food. Skipping meals to accommodate the calories that come with alcoholic drinks usually backfires, because they usually cause you to eat more than you intend. Pre-planning the number of drinks you will have is a better solution.

  1. Drink meal replacement shakes

Instead of having cups of winter eggnog, substitute them only for the best meal replacement shakes available. Your can pour these tasty concoctions in your wine glass and use them to make holiday toasts.

Shakes like Ideal Shape have the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins to satisfy weight loss needs. They are perfect meal substitutes for busy mothers, who may find it difficult to grab quality food on the go. These shakes support your exercise regimen and serve as nourishing post workout drinks. They make sure that you burn necessary calories.

  1. Make time to exercise.

Mothers who are always in a rush often find it difficult to find the time to exercise. You can grab a minute during the day to climb stairs and boost your cardiovascular health. A minute spent doing twenty push ups helps to burn fat and builds arm muscle as well.

When possible, gather a few friends and enjoy an aerobic session together. Friends can help to push you towards your weight loss goals. A daily brisk walk with the family dog will also keep offensive calories away.gym women exercising

  1. Have proper rest.

Winter can mean endless parties and sleep deprivation. You often find yourself cramming many activities into your day.

Sleep deprivation can lead to cravings for high calorie foods. Find a way to reject invitations, when necessary, that will mean too-rich food and stress. Plan your schedules so that you will have enough sleep.

It is also essential to take some time for yourself during the day. Spend this time gathering your thoughts and planning your weight loss program.

  1. Eat plain, dark chocolate.

Winter makes hot chocolate, or any kind of chocolate a draw, since it warms you. Studies show that sugarless dark chocolate hastens weight loss, as it curbs the appetite. Having a cup of cocoa without sugar can help you to shed excess festive weight.

  1. Drink lots of water

Staying hydrated prevents bloating and interference with the digestive process. Herbal infusions and coconut water keep your body hydrated. They contain fiber, which will keep you full and satisfied. It also aids digestion and colon health.

Natural weight loss herbs: Where to find them in Canada

To add, there are herbs that serve the weight loss needs of Canadian moms like yourself. Including some of these in your dishes will help to solve weight loss problems.

  1. Ginseng

Many people value ginseng for its ability to boost energy and metabolism. Studies involving mice show that it has weight loss benefits. Mice given ginseng extract showed weight loss after 12 days.

Canadian moms have access to ginseng grown in their country. Rainey Ginseng in Waterford, Ontario, has grown it since 1947, and their ginseng mixes are available online. You can browse through their site at

  1. Cayenne Pepper

Capsaicin, which gives chilis and peppers their heat, fights obesity by limiting calories, lessening fat and lowering blood fat levels. Its heat potency increases thermogenesis, or the body’s ability to generate heat to burn calories. This, in turn enhances its metabolism. It counters the decrease in metabolism that occurs when a person loses weight.

Canadian moms can find Cayenne pepper as they shop at grocery stores such as Walmart, Canada. Natural food stores all over the country will also have it in stock.

  1. Cinnamon

Studies have shown that cinnamon, a root grown in Sri Lanka, raises metabolism and regulates sugar. It is a boon for those with diabetic conditions. This herb also lowers total cholesterol levels.

Mothers from Canada can have cinnamon tea shipped to them when they buy it from Canadian suppliers such as Spice Sanctuary, which sells other spices, herbs and spice rubs. Browse through the site at http://www.

These seeds are found in most grocery and natural food stores across Canada. You can also buy mustard seeds online from The Silk Road spice merchants at

  1. Tumeric

A base for spice and curry dishes, tumeric has curcumin. This yellow-orange spice reduces fat tissue by suppressing the blood vessels that the body uses to form it. It also allows the body to process insulin and reduces obesity related symptoms. These include hyperglycemia (excess blood sugar) and hyperlipidermia (excess fat).

Busy moms who may not have enough time to scour spice shops in Canada can buy it from The Silk road at or

  1. Ginger

Ginger, another warming spice, has anti-inflammatory properties and aids digestion by soothing the intestinal tract. It also has thermogenic properties that boost metabolism. Serving as a base for Asian dishes, it is found in all supermarkets.

  1. Cardamom

Cardamom, an aromatic spice with a sweet flavor, also promotes thermogenesis and burns calories. It increases metabolism and the body’s fat-burning ability. It is a popular weight-loss remedy used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Moms can buy it from spice shops all over Calgary and other parts of Canada. Cardamom and Cloves, a spice shop and the brain child of spice enthusiast Jodi Samis, sells it as well. Find her at

  1. Black pepper

Black, ground pepper has piperine, which gives it the pungent flavor we are familiar with. What we probably are not so familiar with is that it blocks fat cells from forming. When combined with capsaicin and other spices, pepper can burn as many calories as a 20-minute walk. Busy mothers can integrate it quickly in many dishes. They can also find it easily at all grocery stores.

  1. Cumin

Cumin, another spice used in curries, regulates digestion and produces energy. it also regulates blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes. Apart from weight loss, this spice boosts memory and is a stress reliever.

Alternative remedies for weight loss

Natural herbs aside, there are therapies that busy mom in Canada can use to lose winter weight. These are a little avant-garde, but studies point to their potency.

  1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a therapy commonly used by traditional Chinese medical practitioners, works on the premise that qi, or energy, flows through the body’s meridians, or acupoints. To complement the practice, practitioners burn herbs near these meridians.

Studies have shown that it helps people lose weight. Hibiscus, a well-known flower, is herb that practitioners burn at the body’s meridians to promote weight loss . The flower has anti-cholesterol properties and can regulate the body’s lipids. Studies published in the journal, obesity, attest to its weight-loss efficiency.

Moms in Canada can search for practitioners near them at

  1. Acupressure

Like acupuncture, acupressure is a traditional Chinese therapeutic practice that involves the body’s meridians. Practitioners stimulate them with finger pressure.

Studies show that this stimulating therapy promotes weight loss. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine revealed that patients who underwent acupressure treatment lost 2.5 pounds.

There are many acupressure clinics in Ontario and other parts of Canada.

Real Investing Tips That Can Change Your Life

OTOTWFK is very lucky to have so many great sponsers for our cause. Today we have a special post from our friends at

A lot of people want to start a career in investing in real estate. To succeed, you must become educated on how to invest wisely. Read on to learn how you are able to get started.

Remember that real estate investing is all about the numbers. When you’re buying a home to live in, you may get emotional about the place, but there’s no room for that in investing. You need to keep your eye on the data and make your decisions with your head, not your heart.

Always educate yourself when it comes to real estate before making your first investment. This is something you must do because there are a lot of tips about business that are out there. You can read books, watch DVD programs, sign up for workshops and take classes to learn all about real estate.

In real estate investing, it’s important to maintain a sterling reputation. Be impeccable with your word, and build a reputation for being trustworthy. This makes your reputation increase.

Take time to do investing, and take time to learn about it. If this means sacrificing an activity or hobby, then that’s what you have to be willing to do. Let go of some of your recreational time and invest it in your property.

Stick with what you’re comfortable doing. If you specialize in one area, it will be easier to be successful. It is very important that you stay with what works and what you are good at, and that is the best way to generate lots of success for you.

If you are looking to buy a rental property from a seller, ask to see his Schedule E tax form. That particular document will honestly tell you what kind of cash flow you can expect from the property in question. Crunching the numbers tells you all you need to know about whether or not to buy.

Beware of buying single-family homes in a neighborhood that is full of rental property. Typically, a rental neighborhood is not a desirable location for buyers who want to raise a family. The value of single-family homes in this type of neighborhood will not likely go up very much because of their location.

Location is a big part of real estate. A bad house in a good neighborhood is almost always a better investment than a good house in a bad neighborhood. Think hard about location, and never fail to consider the potential that exists.

Work well and play well when dealing with other people. Rather than seeing other investors in real estate as competition, use them to form a partnership. When you do this, you can start sharing resources and your client lists while pooling the collection of properties you all have to offer. By helping each other out, you can build up a large and satisfied clientele. This will surely help your reputation.

Know that you need a good team to get involved in real estate investing. At a minimum, you need a Realtor, accountant and a lawyer you can all trust. You might even need an investor or a party of fellow investors. Reach out through your personal connections to find individuals who will not let you down.

Remember to factor in the cost of the repairs that an inspection is likely to reveal. If you hope to sell a property you buy, then you need to factor in any remodeling or upgrades and repairs you make. If you are going to rent out the property, you also have to factor in a budget for maintenance. Set aside some money for the renovations that you will have to make.

Look for properties that will be in demand. Really stop and think about what most people will be looking for. Try to find moderately priced properties on quiet streets. Looks for homes with garages and two or three bedrooms. It’s always important to consider what the average person is going to be searching for in a home.

To make sure you buy a good piece of real estate, find out what similar properties have sold for. This will give you a good idea of whether a property you’re considering is worth the price you’re about to pay for it. There are public databases about recent sales, or you can ask a real estate agent to help.

A good way to find out if an area is a good financial investment is by looking at the number of vacancies. If your property is surrounded by vacant properties, chances are that people may not want to move in to yours either.

Normal folks can turn into rich ones by investing in real estate. However, it is not easy to do. It is hoped that you have gained a solid foundation to start from after reading what you have gone over here. This will get you started toward a successful investing career.

We, at Top Ontario Realtors, are very honoured to be involved with such a great cause. We do believe that everyone deserves a chance to be great.

Please visit our website and do not to hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about investing in a new home.…

Winter Time Health and Fitness

Winter Time Health and Fitness

Here at OTOTWFK, health and fitness is very important to us.

It is winter time in the great white North, and with the shorter days, most of us have become deficient in vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D can negatively impact your bones, and cause depression, often why most of us feel down in the winter time.

With the colder weather, most of us also seem to be idling more. There are not many chances for us to get outside to be active, and the cold makes us not want to get ready to go to the gym. It is much more comfortable to be at home, bundled up on the couch or in bed where it is nice and warm.

Being in the wonderful country that is Canada, there are many wonderful outdoor activities that we can participate in. Skating, snowboarding, tobogganing, and of course, HOCKEY! Just make sure you buy the appropriate thermal layers and equipment to keep you nice and toasty. Plus, once you get started and your body warms up, the cold bothers you less and less.

For those who are suffering from seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, you may not be wanting to get up to do anything. This is a temporary condition where you feel, you guessed it, sad in the cold months due to the short days. If this is you, speak to your professional health adviser. A few things you can do to help is make sure you are getting enough vitamin D, and a saffron extract supplement, which can help boost your mood and is also an appetite suppressor, which will help with packing on those extra pounds most of us complain about gaining in the winter.

Take the time this winter to take care of your health and well being by staying active and making the most of the fluffy white stuff!

We are not medical professionals, so if you are suffering from signs of SAD or depression, please seek help from a professional. These are only suggestions based on our experiences, and is in no way professional advice.

What We Do

The best memories from our childhoods come from learning a new skill that we will have for the rest of our lives. The first time we swam without floaties, rode our bike without training wheels, etc. Many of us are fortunate to enjoy those moments, but there are children in families out where being involved in these activities is an unimaginable luxury.

What we do is raise money for children in different communities all across Canada to put them into programs in their communities. Keeping them involved in such activities helps them develop social skills that can be carried with them throughout their entire lives.
